I stopped ready the commercial newspapers some time ago. But the other day I was in the coffee shop and I was drawn to the story on Daniel Morcombe. This was of particular interest to me as personal security is a large part of what we do at Northstar. As parents it is our worst nightmare and it is so random. We can never tell our children enough times the importance of personal security. Whether it is a 13 year old walking to school or a young adult out at night, there will always be someone that wants to hurt you if you so happen to cross into their violent world. Being aware, mindful and paying attention to that gut feeling is the first step in avoiding a potential situation. Having a good backing in martial arts is another great asset.
Mindful Martial Arts.
Just a reminder that your training can extend into your daily routine, by just pausing between activities. Take a breath and be still before answering the phone. Be conscious of your breath when you can feel yourself getting anxious…I have been using this simple mindful technique this morning..it gets a little hectic in the Northstar office.
Can I get a black Belt?
Every student that walks into Northstar has different strengths and weaknesses. Some are older some are younger, some really fit and strong, other smaller and less athletic. When you look at what is required further up the grades you have to realise that the syllabus and what you will be required to complete will be modified and expanded to suit YOUR particular age, fitness, gender and ability. Gradings are great for setting short term, bight sized achievable goals and steadily working towards them and then attaining a positive outcome, providing that you have tried your best. By passing the grades and working with in your own means to steadily improve, body, mind and spirit, you build confidence to tackle bigger challenges. In this way, gradings become a blue print for excelling in every aspect of your life. Hope to see you at the next grading .
Being a Martial Artist
Your mark as a martial artist is how well you live your life. Does it flow with grace or are you constantly at odds with your self. By simply coming back to the breath and being still you throw your time into neutral, allowing life to unfold as it goes, not rushing, getting stressed out by deadlines but methodically focusing at the task at hand. This is your martial arts in action in life. Try it, see how you go.
How is your reaction time?
Not anger but being unkind. Do you lead with kindness and have a forgiving attitude? Or do you come straight out with a right cross…whammo!! If you do you may be surprised how much your world changes by softening. The brittle will eventually break whilst the soft will bend and adapt. Andy
